Leasowe Lighthouse, October 2025

October Outing.

October’s outing was to the Leasowe Lighthouse area on The Wirral where we enjoyed clear, bright, blue skies, a slight breeze and a feel like temp of 15C. We met at the lighthouse car park and walked up onto the grass bank of the sea defence wall.  The tide was at its lowest point which was our intention as we were hoping that the sand and mud banks would have feeding waders. Unfortunately, there were fewer waders than we had hoped for. There were large numbers of Redshanks and a solitary Greenshank, a few birds flying overhead but that was about it. On reaching the second groyne which would be our turning point we noticed a small boat or, should I say, the remains of a small boat as it had been blown up the estuary during recent storms and smashed up against the rocks of the groyne. We were told that the owners had been to the wreck and had salvaged what they could, some of the remains were neatly stacked along the sea wall above the high tide line. The return leg of our walk took us along the compacted shale path, which is much lower than the grass bank pathway, through the shrubbery and this is where we saw most of our sightings for that day. 18 species the total for the day, a lower count than we had anticipated but still a pleasant walk.
