FROM THE CHAIR
Manchester Geological Association Event. On Saturday, September 19th, the Manchester Geological Association will be holding an “Introduction to Geology” event. As with the previous event, and a successful course at this year’s NW u3a Summer School, it is aimed at the amateur geologist, both the established amateur and those totally new to the subject.
It will be held at the University of Manchester Williamson Building, 176 Oxford Rd, Manchester M13 9QQ. There is no charge for the event and there will be complimentary refreshments. Booking is not essential but the organisers would, ideally, like to know how many participants to expect (please email niallclarke01@gmail.com. ) He is, apparently, the man organising the biscuits!
Programme -
11:30 - The human impact on geology - how we are changing the planet.
12:30 - Break with tea and coffee provided.
13:15 - Practical session in the Labs, and an opportunity to look at the University collection.
The session should end at around 14:30.
Also,
Northwest Region have invited us to join them for “a cracking good opportunity” to catch up with u3a friends from around the region and find out what’s going on in our area. This will take place on Wednesday, 30th September from 11.00 - 14.30. Venue - The Grand Hotel, Lord Street, Southport, PR9 0QG, in The Princess Grace Suite, on the first floor. (A lift is available.)
There is free parking at the back of the Grand. Local and regional buses stop outside on Lord Street, Southport. u3a members will collect visitors from Southport Train Station or the venue is 10-minute walk from there. (Please advise if you need collecting from the station and provide mobile number)

The cost is £21.00 a head to include lunch, tea and coffee and afternoon ice cream. Payment by Monday 21st September to Northwest Region of u3as.

U3A MAGAZINE - Third Age Matters

A WORD ABOUT GIFT AID
Chester City u3a is a charity and your annual subscription is regarded as a gift on which we can claim Gift Aid and boost your sub by 25% if you are a UK taxpayer and are willing for us to do so. Media reports suggest that over the past 3 years, when the HMRC tax free allowance has not increased, more than a million people paid income tax for the first time. If you fall into this category
and are willing for us to reclaim Gift Aid please complete the form, which is at the bottom of this Newsletter, and email it to our treasurer or hand it in at our meeting. Our committee suggest that everyone who is eligible should do so to ensure that we have a correct record and are not underclaiming from HMRC. Gift Aid is one of our few sources of income and provides about 10% of our budget.
