November Outing.
This month’s outing was to the RSPB reserve at Burton Mere Wetlands. Weather was a feel like temp of 11C with a light breeze. It was bright to begin with however late morning it clouded over a there was some light rain. On entering the visitor centre, we noticed a distinct lack of wildlife on the lagoons, and it soon became apparent why. The RSPB had been cutting back some of the reeds etc. An essential task to maintain the habitat of the reserve and of course being carried out at this time of the year to reduce impact on the wildlife. However, standing majestically on opposite fringes of the centre lagoon were two Great White Egrets, their pure white feathers standing out and looking as though they had just finished preening themselves. A few years ago, this species was virtually unknown this far north however their numbers have increased of late and hopefully this trend will continue. Walking along to the screen we heard the unmistakable call of the Raven. It very quickly came into sight. Then, following behind, its partner also showed itself. At the screen we were faced with what must have been maybe a thousand Teal, some feeding on the water, some along the fringes and some just sitting. On seeing these, the group talked about how the wardens would go about counting this huge flock. Perhaps that subject could be for a future newsletter. Our species count for the morning was 17.
