The readers meet at 2.30pm on the first Wednesday of the month. At Bowling Green Court, Brook Street.
A meeting with a difference for the reading group this month as we welcomed local author Sian Hughes to talk about her Booker Prize long-listed novel “Pearl.” Sian gave us a fascinating talk about the things that had inspired her to write the book, namely a school homework assignment, a return to Cheshire after a spell away, her experiences of grief and a medieval poem written by a Cheshire writer in the 14th century! She went on to describe her personal writing process and outlined the processes of publication and Booker Prize listing.
The time flew by and we all thoroughly enjoyed Sian’s talk. We had opened up this event to all Chester City members and were thrilled to welcome several “extras” for the meeting.
Footnote: Sian’s new book, “No Such Thing As Monday” has just been published. This book was inspired by a poem called “Purity” from the same medieval manuscript as “Pearl.” It tells the story of a woman who works in a dry-cleaning shop and notices every detail of people’s clothes…
New members always welcome.
